Mukhammetgeldi Serdarov, Turkmenistan’s Finance Minister has met with Gwi-Yeop Son, the regional director of UN Development Coordination Office for Europe and Central Asia, to discuss plans to create a joint national fund to finance the projects of UN agencies in Turkmenistan.

Both parties stated that the creation of the joint fund will contribute to the successful implementation of the goals outlined in the framework programs of cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the UN, as well as the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and their financing. Furthermore, they discussed issues of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN, paying special attention to cooperation in the implementation of the Agenda for the period up to 2030 and possible new projects. The UN and its partners in Turkmenistan are working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: 17 interconnected and ambitious Goals which address the major development challenges faced by people in Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan’s UN based development goals can be seen here.

Some of these coincide with existing development plans, not least the development of Ashgabat, the capital city, as a Smart City complex with the assistance of Russian funding. Chinese investors are also looking at investing into Turkmenistan’s logistics services as the country plan to position itself as a logistics hub between Central Asia and the Middle East and Europe via its Caspian Sea port at Turkmenbashi.
