China Launches Official OBOR Portal

China has launched an official “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) portal as a promotional tool showcasing different aspects of the OBOR initiative. It is currently in both Chinese and English languages.

The site is similar in structure to China Daily, and is essentially news focused. In instances, it is more of a Chinese overseas involvement play than purely OBOR related.

For example, news concerning UN Security Council resolutions are included. Press releases concerning bilateral friendships are included in official documents and there is a data statistics section dealing with China’s GDP and export figures.

The Cooperation Priorities section is again news based, with archived and updated news mainly derived from Xinhua and similar sources.

The International Cooperation section highlights 37 different countries with brief national profiles and their historic bilateral relations with China, together with news on the most recent meetings held between the respective countries governments.

The Enterprises section profiles 90 Chinese SOEs while the Foreign Enterprises section is news based with no foreign companies actually being profiled. An OBOR inquiry form is included, and is essentially a search function related to the Chinese SOEs listed on the portal. It does not appear possible to generate intelligence on upcoming projects or OBOR related tenders.

The news function is a useful source for round up data, and the site an interesting and welcome addition to understanding the complexities of China’s work within the OBOR initiative.
