Russian President Putin Visiting Russian Far East, Discussing Regional Development With China, Mongolia, India, and ASEAN nations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Kamchatka today (Monday, September 5), the region of the Russian Far East with extensive trade ties and development ties with China, Japan, Mongolia and North & South Korea. Putin will meet with local officials, and on Tuesday (September 6) attend the Vostok 2022 (East 2022) strategic command and staff exercise, which includes troops from China and India, hold an expanded meeting of the State Council’s presidium on the development of Russia’s national tourism industry in the Far East.
On Wednesday, (September 7) he is due to give a speech at the Plenary session on the development of the Far East at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, and to discuss this in person with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene, Chinese Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Li Zhanshu, together with Myanmar’s Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing. It is expected that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will address the participants via a video link. Chris Devonshire-Ellis, the Chairman of Dezan Shira & Associates, will also be attending this session.
Additionally, Putin has bilateral meetings planned with the foreign leaders invited to the event.
The Russian Far East has extensive energy, mineral, timber, and marine resources, and has areas of outstanding natural beauty. Vladivostok is also the entry point of the Trans-Siberian railway, which ultimately connects through to China, as well as via Kazakhstan to Europe, and is also the gateway to the Northern Sea Route, which is developing as a major maritime energy conduit from Russia to Asia – and to Europe as and when the political situation resolves itself.
Russia’s development plans for the region were previously outlined in the article State Development Plans In The Russian Far East & Arctic while China Railways have expressed interest in the region as a priority issue. Japan also has extensive gas pipeline projects underway with Japan’s Mitsubishi and Matsui recently committing to the Sakhalin 2 project despite G7 opposition.
