Six sites in China and Russia to jointly provide cooperative navigation, communication and surveillance systems

China and Russia have signed contracts for the deployment of China’s Beidou system stations in Russia, and Russia’s GLONASS stations in China, Russia’s state corporation Roscosmos has stated. The cooperation paves the way for strategic cooperation in satellite navigation projects.

The Chinese stations will be based in Obninsk, Irkutsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, while Russia’s GLONASS stations will be located in Urumqi, Changchun and Shanghai.

Roscosmos CEO Yury Borisov said “Used simultaneously, the Russian and Chinese systems – GLONASS and Beidou – will increase the accuracy and reliability of navigation. Therefore, we are interested in wider cooperation in using the GLONASS and Beidou systems, as well as new navigation technologies based on them.”

Chinese and Russian institutes are also cooperating in support services, with the Test and Assessment Research Center at the China Satellite Navigation Office and the Russian Information and Analytical Center for Coordinate, Time and Navigation Support of the Central Research Institute for Machine Building (TsNIIMash) jointly providing information support services to GLONASS and Beidou customers.

The systems can be expected to ensure the complementarity of the two countries global navigation satellite systems, including cooperation in communications and surveillance. In trade, this can be used to verify, via blockchain technologies, the exact origins of component parts across all spheres of the manufacturing process, which allows for improved QC analysis and product verification.
