Silk Road Tallest Flagpole Rivalry: Azerbaijan About To Take The Lead From Saudi Arabia
A somewhat bizarre unofficial contest has been taking place along the Silk Road in terms of who possesses the tallest flagpole. Azerbaijan held the record from 2010 until Tajikistan took the honour a year later. Since 2014, Saudi Arabia has held the record with a flagpole measuring 170m.
A subsidiary of Turkish construction company ENKA said that it was building the world’s tallest flagpole for Azerbaijan to retake the title, with plans to build a new tallest flagpole, sited in Baku 191 metres high. To put that into context, London’s Big Ben clocks in at 96m, and the Statue of Liberty at 93m.
