Turkiye’s Europe-Asia Ambarli Port H1 2022 Transit Cargo Shipping Up

The Turkish port of Ambarli handled 9.6 million tons of cargo from January through June 2022, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye has stated, showing a significant improvement over 2021, driven by the Ukraine conflict.

According to the ministry, 1.5 million tons of cargo was transported by ships under the flag of Türkiye through the port of Ambarli, and 8.1 million tons by ships under the flags of other countries, while Ambarli handled 4.7 million tons of transit cargo in the first half of 2022.

Ambarli is near to Istanbul on the Marmara Sea and is a maritime link servicing Europe. It is connected via rail to Azerbaijan’s Baku Port and from there via either the Middle Corridor to China or via the INSTC through Iran to the Middle East, East Africa, India, and South Asia.

Overall, Türkiye Ports handled 197.2 million tons of cargo from January through June 2022. During this period, cargo transportation by ships under the Türkiye flag through local ports amounted to 13.7 million tons, while by ships under the flags of other countries – 183.4 million tons.

Turkish ports handled 41.59 million tons of transit cargo in the first half of this year.
